Chapter Seven

“For a nonbeliever, she’s ahead of the game.” Mackie stared after India’s retreating form.

“I’d say she’s mostly a believer now,” Gieselman replied. “And I’m going to enjoy training with her. She treats me like a … brother or something. Kinda reminds me of my baby sister, anyway. I like her.”

Frankel put his two cents in. “I almost felt bad pulling that surprise move.”

“You should have seen Burke’s face!”

He growled at Gieselman. “She wasn’t ready. We don’t want her to sustain an injury she can’t heal from, seeing as we’ve only got a few days to be ready!”

“Oh, that’s the concern.”

Mackie stepped between them as he moved toward the other man. “What’s going on, Burke?”

He unclenched his fists. He’d been with these guys forever and owed them some kind of explanation—if only he had one. “Maybe there’s more to the role of Protector. I dunno.”

Mackie nodded. “She’s not what we’re used to, for sure. But that’s not it?”

He shook his head. “Maybe. Can things … change?”

“We’re immortal, remember?” his friend replied. “And only called on when—”

“I know.” And he did. They’d made their choice, willing to battle for eternity. Better than the alternative—or so he’d thought, being young and idealistic. “Leave it. I’ll keep my head in the game. Let’s go debrief.”

India was waiting for them, a small, compact figure dressed in a set of fatigues that didn’t seem the least bit military on her, despite the baton she wore tucked in her webbed belt. Her motorcycle boots complemented the look, anyhow. He noted the determined look on her face and braced himself.

Frankel again hurried to offer her a chair, and once she settled onto it, they all found one.

Mackie leaned to poke at the fire, and as coals glowed, he placed a small log on them. After swinging the metal rack back into place, he straightened. “We should have coffee soon.”

The fire would provide some illumination against the upcoming night, but Burke figured he’d be glad of the relative dimness if India held off awhile. Predictably, she didn’t, though she visibly perked up at the comment about coffee.

“What’s your story?”

He hedged. “Don’t you want to discuss technique? Debrief?”

“Later. I’ve held off people, friendships, and … relationships for most of my life—with good reason. People suck. Now, I find myself here, about to do battle with something that I still wonder is real and that I might not survive if it is. Don’t think that I can’t read between the lines. I want to know who has my back.”

She wasn’t at all self-absorbed, he realized. That made her different, and he found he’d like to know her, past the fact that she was a Destined—and the attraction he battled. After exchanging a swift glance with the others, he said, “The four of us were, are, Marines.”

She squinted at him. “There were Marines nearly a hundred years ago?”

“Further.”

“Huh. News to me, but I studied really ancient history.” She chewed her lip. “So how did the … Light come into it?”

“We were recruited by it.
